Learning World, Episode 29: Inspiring pre-schoolers

Featured in the 29th episode of Learning World, the 2010 WISE Awards winning project, the Mother Child Education Program (MOCEP), highlights the importance of mothers in preparing and developing children’s learning processes.

In this episode we learn that interactions between parents and children have a crucial impact on the development of children’s cognitive skills. In a country like Turkey, a lot of children stay at home with their parents because they cannot afford to go to pre-primary school. To avoid late school stats becoming a handicap, MOCEP has placed mothers at the centre of child education by giving them the key role as first educators in the pre-school phase.

By being taught to provide a pre-school environment at home, through day-to-day discipline, mothers get to understand – and participate in – their children’s development.

This successful model has inspired other European and Middle Eastern countries to adopt similar programmes.
