Special Focus: Innovating for Quality Education in Africa

By 2050, more than half of the world’s population growth will occur in Africa and the continent will also be home to 40 percent of all children in the world. Providing quality education to equip youth with the tools to tackle current and future challenges is a global imperative.

How can learning environments tap into the potential of African youth to promote shared prosperity? What are the innovative tools employed to achieve quality education? Speakers at WISE@Accra share their views.

A revolutionary step is possible Cognitive-net, Social-net & Internet Some recent reports inform the following facts. “The promise that all children globally would have primary education by 2015 - pledged by world leaders in the millennium year - has officially not been achieved. Unesco says there are 58 million children without access to primary school and 100 million who do not complete a primary education. Only a quarter of countries achieved the goal of halving adult illiteracy.” (Source BBC: http://www.bbc.com/news/education-32194962 ) "Access [to education] is not the only crisis – poor quality is holding back learning even for those who make it to school," said Unesco director-general, Irina Bokova. (http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2014/jan/29/illiteracy-education-young-people-developing-countries) “Almost half of the world will have access to Internet by the end of 2015” (http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/almost-half-worlds-population-will-have-internet-access-by-end-2015-1503097) The need is very high and our current available resources may not be enough to meet all challenges in a short time. One possible way to support world education (for all countries) is to consider the following (a humble idea): - Start a high quality, effective and multilingual online school with great teachers - The inclusion of reputed universities and internationally acknowledged institutes will enhance quality and there will be hope for higher level participation in the online school, for children and adult literacy - Teachers from various countries who also speak another language will be of help to share their multilingual expertise - Participation of celebrities and world-class educational personalities, scholars with great achievements, will be inspiring to many people, in the relevant context - Design and present lessons which are relevant to specific regions and the needs of learners - Free online quality education can be of some help in certain way - Where possible, online tutoring can also be provided to students, to integrate personal interaction for better learning level to a possible level - Bring various world resources to powerful forum(s) to excel - Providing education which is culturally relevant, and where applicable course selection is available to address learner needs with their local level requirements - Women and girls can also participate from the place of their choice - Including the needs of people with any type of special needs or in-person attendance obstacles - Emphasis and collaboration for the availability of relevant technology resources - In the available circumstances and places, online learning is also supported by local level in-person teaching - Mutual respect and professionalism is promoted - The idea of an online university (Multilingual) is also possible, [One aspect discussed in the following article of Toronto Star- my idea] : http://www.thestar.com/opinion/columnists/2009/03/09/newcomers_languages_are_a_valuable_resource.html I hope our respected organizations, leaders, universities, and other entities will join hands and champion this idea to help all humanity. Big global accomplishments of today were once started with a small step and gradually many entities joined hands for exponential growth. The power of volunteer work can play an important role in this work. I understand it is not a perfect answer to all world problems. This is perhaps one powerful solution to many issues that we want to address to promote peace and human rights through quality education. I hope this idea has potential for further consideration. (Presenting this idea just to help humanity) /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Multilingual education for human rights, peace and inspire all reach the higher level of their creativity Please check the link: http://Cognitivenet.wordpress.com /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// (5) Why we need an International Centre for Science, Technology and Social Science Education - To bring the world ahead in social, economic and the academic fronts, science education for children is an important aspect… - To bring the world ahead at local, national and international level - Involving all countries and using many language groups from a multilingual part of the world will be a powerful start…..(Linguistic power & science power of various countries in action for all world). The power of great ideas across the world to make a positive impact for everyone! - Resource development on a range of themes (along with other resources, one of my idea is research journals for children, simplified form of higher level journals, simple language and pictures) - When one scientist Dr. Abdus Salam (Nobel Laureate) started this work (http://www.ictp.it/ ), where it is now at global level! Imagine! ICTP is only for the higher level scientists---not for children, children could be future scientists, so the need is obvious….the need to include social sciences and sciences is an important dimension. Strengthening global talents from various countries, using a variety of languages, inter-disciplinary approach, and linking theory, research and practice Connecting mind powers across the world, children, teachers, researchers, education science professionals, active scientists of various fields, other scholars, Starting this centre will give an edge to an institute/ university from various dimensions. "Kids need to learn how to leap across disciplines because that is how breakthroughs now come about. It's interdisciplinary combinations- design and technology, mathematics and art—that produce youtube and myspace." (TIME, December 18, 2006, page 34) ............................................................................ Please see the letter from a Nobel Laureate (Dr. Peter Doherty) on the importance of early years teaching and more: http://download.ei-ie.org/Docs/WebDepot/PeterDohertyNobelLetter_EN_final.pdf >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (6) According to European Public Health Alliance (EPHA): “Injury is the number one cause of death for children in every Member State in Europe, not cancer, not respiratory or heart illnesses, or meningitis. Child injury accounts for 36% of all deaths” Now imagine what we are missing and what can be done in the 21 century! Also consider the need in many other countries in the world, where injury prevention education (safety education) has not yet taken an effective place in the schools and communities. Imagine a dream! If the world has injury prevention lessons in all schools & communities using their local languages with region specific & global knowledge. We will be protecting many lives from serious disasters. In the high-tech age, modern inventions can pave way to expedite this type of work. .......................................................
