José Augusto de Melo Neto is Director of Amazonas Media Center for Education, managing the Distance Learning in the Amazon Forest project. The Distance Learning in the Amazon Forest project reaches out to extremely remote communities through the Internet and satellite technology. Launched in 2007 by the Amazonas State, this revolutionary project is already offering quality education to over 34,000 students.

The WISE experience is really renewing. You feel like a part of a global community with the responsibility to change the world in the best of senses. It’s not, in any way, an empty rhetoric. The subjects presented are very pertinent and optimism is renewed.


The performand of this project in the rural communities of the Amazon, in Brazil, is, besides the pedagogical and technological challenge, a great logistic challenge. How to install and perform the maintenance of vsats antennas and other computing equipment in a State of the size of the Amazon, cut by more than one thousand rivers?
